Top Packing Tips for Moving House
There is so much to do when you are moving house that you can use any help you can get. We’ve put together a list of our top tips, which should make the dreaded task of packing up your house for the removalists a little bit easier.
Employ a packing service
One way you can avoid the hassle and stress of packing up your home is to employ a professional packing service to do the job for you. Moving house is an expensive business and this option will add to your costs, but the advantages are obvious. Rather than spending the last few hours in your old home frantically trying to get everything ready for the removalists, you can instead hand over responsibility to someone else and relax. If you employ a packing service the day will be yours to do with what you want. Anyone who has ever known the frustration of hunting for the packing tape that disappeared for the umpteenth time, or trying to figure out how to pack yet another awkward piece of furniture, will know what a great idea this is!
Keep records
If you do decide to do the packing yourself then it is important to be organised. At the very least, mark or colour code each box, so that you know which room it should go into when it gets to your new place. Better still, keep a list of what is packed into each box so that you can find any items relatively easily without having to unpack everything all in one go.
Mark boxes containing fragile items clearly
Removalists are experts at handling all sorts of personal possessions, including fragile items. What they are not, however, are mind readers. Make sure that you mark all boxes containing fragile items very clearly or don’t be surprised if some of your possessions don’t make it in one piece.
Create an essentials box
When you arrive at your new house and the removalists have left, you will probably find yourself exhausted and the last thing you will want to do is hunt through numerous different boxes to find the basic essentials. If you pack an “essentials” box containing things like a kettle and some tea or coffee, you will be able to sit down and have a relaxing cuppa to help you build up your strength before the real unpacking begins. Other things you might include in your essentials box include a bottle opener, soap or hand wash, a towel and some toilet roll. Just try to think what you are most likely to need in the first few hours in your new home and pack it all in one place.
Allow plenty of time to pack
Packing up an entire home always takes longer than you think, so make sure you allow plenty of time. Both local and interstate removalists work to tight schedules so it is critical that you are ready when they arrive. If you hold them up, it may not just be you that is affected, but the next clients and the ones after that.
