The Empowerment of Women in Sports

14 March 2011 No Comment

Women are now well on their way to equaling men in the world of sports. Gone are the days when men completely dominated virtually every sport on the planet. Women are regular participants in sports other than figure skating and tennis. These days, women can excel even in the sports that were once considered as masculine.
This change in the world of sports is perhaps brought about by the changing times and the societal empowerment of women. The world has now recognized the ability of women to do well in sports that were once dominated by men. It is now common for people to watch and support female boxers, female basketball players, and female soccer players.
While there were sports that were considered feminine, such as volleyball and badminton, many women today now excel in contact sports. Laila Ali is recognized around the world not only for being the daughter of boxing legend Muhammad Ali, but also as a winning boxer herself. Aside from boxing, a lot of females also do sports such as judo, karate and taekwondo.
Females also excel in group sports. For instance, a women’s rugby league throughout the United States and in other countries gives females the opportunity to play a sport that requires extreme physicality. In Glendale, Colorado, women’s rugby league teams regularly participate in domestic competitions, which help hone their athletic abilities and competitive attitude. Some women’s rugby league teams have also won championships in various competitions.
Aside from a women’s rugby league, another group contact sport where women excel is basketball. The establishment of a basketball association for women in 1996 gave females the opportunity to play the same sport for which male athletes are extremely popular. Women’s basketball already enjoys as much support as male basketball, and women are now recognized as capable basketball players.
Women’s rugby league, women’s basketball, boxing and martial arts are just some of the sports that have now embraced the idea of female athletes. In the years to come, more sporting events will eventually gain the participation of more women. More than ever, women are empowered to excel in a lot of areas, especially in sports.
