Your study may be getting a little out of date or you have children who need to use it too. This is a great opportunity to completely redesign your study. The keys are to create a warm and inviting work environment that is free of clutter, functional and has plenty of storage for everything from pens to text books. Don’t be scared to add your own unique style either, such as a pot plant, to enhance the aesthetics.

Colour

Colour plays a big part in creating the mood of the room. Not all colours suit all rooms and that is particularly the case with a study. When it comes to the walls, choose neutral or warm tones. Light blues and greens also work well, but don’t go too bold with them.

Avoid red (it invokes excitement and increases energy levels) and yellow (it can cause feelings of frustration and anger).

When it comes to furniture, white usually fits in best. Beech-coloured furniture is also popular because of its neutral tone. While neutral works best, there is no harm in adding a splash of colour to add your own personal style. Consider some accessories, such as a lamp, rubbish bin and desk trays, all in one colour such as a bold red.

Storage

To keep your study functional you need to reduce the clutter. You also need to have everything within easy reach. Consider a lockable filing cabinet for your more sensitive documents that fits under the desk. You will also want a storage cabinet where books, files and other items can be kept out of sight. There are plenty of options but sometimes the tall cabinets can take up valuable space. Consider a cabinet that is only half the height – it then gives you another surface on which to place other items.

Shelving is also a great way to store and display items. They are simple to install and come in a wide range of sizes and colours. Install them over the desk to create a professional feel or on a wall where they can also act as a design feature. Make sure the colour fits in with the rest of the furniture. Get some funky stationary holders for your desk as well. Not only do they look good but they keep all of your pens, pencils and other items tidy and within easy reach.

Consider your computer

Everyone has a computer these days and they can take up a lot of space in the study. Consider your desk space and don’t overwhelm it with electronics. Place the computer box under the desk to save valuable room. Get a monitor that is an appropriate size – the same goes for peripherals such as printers. They can be bulky so consider their position carefully. Use a wireless keyboard and mouse as well to save on unsightly cables. If you do have a lot of cables, there is a wide range of cable ties that can manage them much better. Even better, use a laptop which takes up much less room and doesn’t need as many peripherals.

Desk and chair

A good desk is the cornerstone of a functional study. They vary widely in cost, style, colour and features. You need to make sure you get the desk that fits your room and needs the best. Measure your room before buying a new desk to make sure it will fit. Keep it within the colour scheme of the entire study. Most of all, ensure it is sturdy and has enough room for you to work.

Don’t ignore the chair either. It should be comfortable and supportive. Make sure it is on wheels and can be easily adjusted. Consider getting a chair mat that will allow it to roll about more easily. It will also protect your floor coverings.

When you look at other business’s websites do you notice any problems that you don’t want associated with your business? Perhaps it is the copywriting on the site not being up to scratch or even a completely hopeless web design that isn’t functional. Whatever it is, we can all learn from other businesses online and other technology mistakes.

Not doing your background research (especially on competitors) can mean you are missing out on opportunities. It can also mean that you are falling behind the rest of your industry in terms of best practices and technology usage. This could be something basic like backing up on cloud computing services or not using the best software for improving productivity.

Missing Out on Opportunities

If anything is to be learnt from many traditional retail businesses it is the dangers of missing the boat on new opportunities. With retail businesses failing the online commerce sector is booming and while it is not completely replacing the lost revenue it could have saved many businesses. But how can you really recognise any future developments?

Well, the best way to do this is to be open to new ideas and processes. If you are at least trialling new things you will know if they are working or not. This is especially true for low investment opportunities such as online stores.

Not Investing Enough

You might also have noticed that many businesses make the right moves but do not back it up with the right investment. The old saying that you have to spend money to make money is true enough and this is especially pertinent in relation to IT. If you have a great online store but are not investing in marketing properly you may as well not have an online store.

Just because something is new and IT related does not mean that the same rules for investment do not apply. However, it is also possible to have a lot of wastage in terms of IT.

Wasting Time Online

There has been a lot of talk in the last decade about investing time in IT, especially in relation to the Internet. However, some of these views are changing and for some businesses, IT is a bit of a waste of time. This is not to belittle its influence but to understand when computer use really isn’t needed.

Many tradesmen actually complain about computers taking up too much of their time when they just want to do their actual job according to their qualification, not answer emails all day.

This is best demonstrated by social media and the amount of lost hours there are due to workers and companies using it. This would be fine if there was a return on investment valuable enough to warrant such a move, however, it is easier to employ others to do this for you while you concentrate on your core business.

Messing Up New Strategies

While it is important to keep experimenting and trying new strategies, you will also have to make sure you don’t make a mess of your IT. Be careful with online strategies especially, because anything you do online may linger for longer than you think!

Protecting your home with alarm systems is something that we all do to protect ourselves from fire and theft. It is a constant worry that your home will become victim of a burglary or a fire, so it is important to protect your property wherever possible. The simple systems that we all have are often not enough to protect your home from theft or fire. This article will consider some of the steps you can take to prevent both fire and burglary affecting your home.

Fire

Get your wiring checked to ensure there are no fire hazards. Electrical failure is one of the biggest causes of fires, so it is important to ensure your home’s wiring is up to standard. It is also important not to overload the circuits by drawing too much electricity out with extension cords. Overloading an extension cord can cause it to overheat. This can also occur where long extension cords are left coiled whilst in use.

Keep fire starters out of reach of children. Children are inquisitive and do not understand the dangers of fire. They are often both the cause and the victim of fires so it is essential to prevent them from being able to start a fire in the first place.

Under no circumstances should you leave cooking unattended. If you are leaving the room for just a minute then turn the gas off for just a minute; it won’t make a difference to your food but it could save your life.

Install fire alarms on every floor so that you are quickly alerted to the outbreak of a fire. The earlier the warning you get, the more of your house can be saved and the easier it will be to escape.

Never leave materials either on a radiator or near an open fire. Using fires and heaters to dry your clothes is a very dangerous practice which is entirely unnecessary.

Theft

Always have a lamp on a timer switch so that, even when you are away, it appears as though someone is home. One of the easiest ways to deter burglars is to make them think someone is at home. No burglar wants to get caught so they will target an obviously empty house instead.

Draw your curtains when you are out, no matter what time of day it is. By drawing your curtains you prevent people from being able to see into the house to identify possessions that are worth taking.

Place a flashing LED light in a window. Whilst this may sound silly, burglars are intimidated by any suggestion of alarms. If you have a not-so-obvious alarm or no alarm at all, then a flashing red LED light will make the thieves believe that you do.

Invest in safety glass. One of the easiest ways into any house is through an old single-pane window. Investing in security windows will make it near impossible for thieves to get through your windows undetected.

Always lock the doors when you are in or out of the house. Many burglaries take place as snatch and grab offences when someone has a sudden opportunity to steal something. Leaving a door open momentarily or leaving a back door unlocked whilst you watch TV could allow someone to grab your car keys and wallet.

Australia really is a lucky country, although when it comes to the awesome education system here, it’s all thanks to hard work and dedication. If you or your children are lucky enough to get your education down here, you are sure to be treated to some of the best quality, modern and comprehensive education you could find anywhere. The following are five of the best things about Australia’s education system.

Top Quality

The teaching standard in Australia is extremely high, right across the board, so whether you are talking about primary school, high school or post secondary education, the quality of education in Australia is up there with the best in the world. Where once teachers were grade 9 students plucked from the class and given authority over their peers, nowadays the training process for teachers is both thorough and intense, with the result being some of the world’s best educators.

Modern

Being a wealthy first world country, Australia’s education system is equipped with all of the latest in educational resources and teaching tools, meaning students here are able to take advantage of the latest in modern learning. Obviously there is a significant difference between state and private schools, with the private schools far better supplied, though overall, the education industry is very modern here and therefore provides a big advantage to its students.

Active

Australia is a very active country. This is reflected in the education system with a big focus on fitness, health, and sport forming a major part of all levels of schooling. Australian schools realise that it is important that their students are active, as this helps their overall development and leads to higher quality learning. Sport is also seen as a great training ground for mateship, leadership and teamwork skills. Kids here often outperform their equivalents in other countries, both in academia and sport; so if you are looking for a place to exercise your brain as well as your body, try Australia.

Respected

Regardless of the level of schooling, it is always important that the institution you or your child graduates from, is respected by other places where you may want to apply at later on. Australian schools are highly respected throughout the world, so whether you are wanting to do an exchange to another university overseas, or you are moving and need to get your child accepted by a school in another country, the great reputation of the education system here will make life way easier for you. This is a huge bonus as it can often save you having to retake a class or repeat a year, saving you time and money.

Multicultural

One of the real highlights of the education system in Australia is that it comprises people from all over the world, both in terms of teachers and students. Multiculturalism is firmly embedded in most education curriculum here, whether it be primary school history or hotel school cooking, making for a well rounded education involving multiple different cultural perspectives.

Giving without thinking is a very uncommon trait in human beings. And yet, giving without thinking can also make us better people and help us to find more rewarding things in life. So how can you start to give more to your family and your community?

Be Proactive, Give First

Part of the art of giving, is to give first, without being asked to do so and without it being in return for a favour. Being proactive in your giving could mean helping your child with their homework, before they even asked you or by volunteering your time at a local church, community group, hospital or retirement village.

Ask For Nothing in Return

Giving should be a selfless act – and so when you give, you should neither ask for anything in return, nor expect it. Instead, think about what you yourself got from the ‘giving’ experience. Should someone give you a gift basket or a thank you card in return for your help, however, accept it graciously and think about how you might use the gift to give once again.

Pay It Forward

Part of being giving and open-minded is also about ‘paying it forward.’ If someone does something nice for you, you repay the favour by doing something nice for someone else. Alternatively, if you do a favour for someone – ask him or her to show their appreciation by conducting a similar action for another person. You’ll be surprised how fast it catches on!

Help Those in Need

The art of giving is also about helping those in need. This could be as simple as helping an elderly woman carry her shopping bags or as extravagant as donating money to a charity. Helping those in need can also be lots of fun. Volunteering at a hospital can put a smile on the face of some that are struggling with their health in the long or short term. If you are the creative type, you could design some Christmas cards for charity, and perhaps even get some assistance from your kids on different designs.

Believe in Someone

Believing in someone is a huge part of giving, because it means you inspire, love and give this special person the motivation they need to succeed. You might believe in your partner, your child, a friend or a work colleague – whoever it is, be open and encouraging and support them in their passions and endeavours.

Give Blood

Giving blood is something that only a few Australians do each year. The Red Cross Blood Bank, however, is always looking for more donors. If you don’t donate blood, consider whether you should. This is an incredibly selfless act, where your donations go directly to those in life-critical situations, whether it’s for a complete stranger or someone you know.

Give Forgiveness

Forgiveness is one of the greatest gifts you can give to someone. It’s easy and often quite natural to remain angry, hold grudges or sulk about certain things – but forgiving someone can help you become a much more giving person, especially in relation to your friends and family. While you shouldn’t just brush things under the carpet or turn into a “push over,” forgiving those that are close to you is the most rewarding gift of all.

Summers are just around the corner and so are the holidays for teenagers and other young adults attending schools or colleges. Every teenager loves this part of the year and waits for it to arrive. But once it is here, most of us are eventually bored after spending some days on the beaches or partying out with friends. There is not much partying that you can do outside the comforts of your home in immense heat. Without air conditioners or coolers, even partying seems to be a headache after a few days.

Another problem that teenagers usually face during this period is associated with finances. With partying and going out with friends, most of us finish off with our resources during the early days of our holidays. Even the parents are a bit more strict during this period when it comes to matters of money. Hence, the best thing to do is to earn your own money. There are many summer jobs out there that might help you in accomplishing this task.

Benefits of a Summer Job

1) Experience and Growth – Summer jobs not only help you earn money, but also some good experience. You get a chance to meet and work with professionals which in turn helps with your overall growth and development. A summer job also gives you some training which helps you with your future jobs when you get past your teenage.

2) Training and Portfolio – A summer job also helps you get some professional training. This strengthens your portfolio when you go out for a job on getting a degree or a diploma. Professionals always prefer people who are already trained or have some experience with how to work in an organization. So, a summer job also helps you in this regard.

3) Money – Finally, as mentioned earlier, a summer job helps you earn some good money. It not only solves problems related to your pocket money but may also bring some good deals like vouchers or subscriptions etc.

Some Good Summer Job Options

1) Summer Camps – Every summer camp needs youngsters who can connect with other teenarges who join as members. Summer camps offer some good money and also some travel options if they are set up in a different city.

2) Fast food Restaurants – Unlike family restaurants, fast food restaurants do not generally require waiters. They actually require people who just have to take an order and hand it over to the customer. The work is easy and the money is good. You even get incentives along with good deals on the food.

3) Clubs – This is a new trend in the market these days. With a summer job in a good club, you get to earn as well as party at the same time. You may go for bartending or hosting. You may even go for security areas if you have a heavy built.

4) Modelling – If you want to earn a lot and also get a bit famous, modelling is the best option for you. All you need to do is get ripped and have a muscular body. You may join a gym and train for a couple of months in advance in order to look good when you apply for modelling. In order to get a ripped body fast, you may have to control your diet and hit the gym hard. Consult a professional trainer in order to do so.

Birds make for wonderful pets because they are social, smart and easy to take care of. They are different from dogs and cats, however, so make sure you are providing your little buddy with everything that he or she needs. Birds are very much creatures of habit and routine, so once they have everything that they need, the art of keeping a happy bird is to change nothing. The following is a short guide to some of the main things to think about when caring for a small bird.

Their Cage

If you want to have anywhere near enough room for your bird, make sure that the cage is at least three times wider than their wing span and that they are able to do short flights in there. Having a cage that is too small is cruel, so be a good pet owner and get them a home fit to live in.

Get the Essential Supplies

Birds love to climb, fly and play, and this doesn’t exclude tossing the odd food or water dish across a room if they feel like they haven’t been given enough to amuse themselves with. Make sure your bird has lots of horizontal bars in their cage to help with climbing, as well as lots of different intricate structures. Your bird will love nothing more than having a large, elaborate cage area to explore.

Keep Them Safe

Make sure that you are keeping your little bird safe by closing windows and turning off the stove when they are outside of their cage. Also be sure that there is no chance that their cage can be knocked over or that they could be left exposed to direct sunlight, heat or cold for long periods of time. Whether it is an expensive bird or if you just want to have a little extra pet cover should anything happen to your precious pet, it is worth investing in pet insurance for your bird, because even a small procedure on a bird can be extremely expensive to pay for.

Feed Them Well

Different kinds of birds eat different kinds of seeds, though regardless of what kind of bird you have, make sure that you are also providing supplements of fresh fruit and vegetables, such as carrots, cucumbers, apples, pears, plums, grapes, oranges and bananas. Cuttlebones and calcium blocks can also help provide your bird with all of their essential minerals.

Exercise

Birds are very social animals and love nothing more than talking to you and playing, so just like you would with a dog, dedicate at least half an hour twice a day to playing with your bird. Having a play area set up outside of the cage is a good idea, as is encouraging your bird to splash around in water and play with toys, as any extra activity is good for your bird’s health as well as their mood. Even just the exercise that they get from flying around your place a few times will be doing them the world of good, and you’ll find you and your bird quickly start building a bit more of an understanding between each other.

Communicate

As with any type of pet, the more you try and communicate with your bird the easier you will be able to tell if they are happy, in discomfort or simply having an off day. Reading up on your type of bird will help, and don’t be afraid to talk to your bird, or use facials expressions to get a message across to them.

Humans are curious creatures, so it is no surprise that, throughout time, people have yearned to see things that are far smaller than could be seen with the naked eye. This curiosity led to the invention of the microscope: an instrument that enables the human eye, by means of a lens or combination of lenses, to see enlarged images of tiny objects. The following is a brief history of one of the most useful scientific instruments of all time: the microscope.

Ancient History

Although the very first use of a lens is still a mystery, it has been well over 2000 years since humans realised that glass bends light. By the 1st century AD, glass could be produced, and the Romans had begun experimenting with different shapes of clear glass. Through the experiments, they discovered that by holing a piece of glass that was thick in the middle with thin edges, an object below it would look larger.

These early lenses were called magnifiers or ‘burning glasses’. The lenses weren’t used much until the end of the 13th century, when spectacle-makers began producing them to be worn as glasses. Then, around 1600, it was discovered that a variety of optical instruments could be made using a combination of lenses.

The First Microscopes

The earliest ‘microscope’ was really only a magnifying glass since it only had one power, usually about 6X to 10X. It was sometime in the late 1500s, however, that this magnifying glass was improved upon by two Dutch spectacle makers, Zaccharias and Hans Janssen. They put several lenses in a tube and discovered that the object at the end of the tube appeared to be greatly enlarged, with a magnification much higher than that of the magnifying glass.

It was Antony Van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723), a Dutch draper and scientist, who pioneered microscopy as we know it and, in the late 17th century, became the first man to make and use a real microscope.

With his improved microscope, Leeuwenhoek was able to see things that no one ever had before because of the impossible small particle size: bacteria, yeast, blood cells and tiny animals swimming in a droplet of water.

Compound Microscopes

Naturally, humans wanted to take this amazing discovery and make it even better by increasing the power of the single-lens microscope. People began working on a microscope that incorporated more than one lens so that the image magnified by one lens could be further magnified by the other. Thus, the compound microscope was born.

Englishman Robert Hooke has been officially credited with the discovery of the basic unit of all life: the cell. In the mid 17th century, Hooke discovered a structural mesh when he studied a sample of cork under the compound microscope. He was also the first to use the basic three-lens configuration that is still used in microscopes today.

Modern Day Microscopes

In recent times, the development of the microscope has slowed except for general enhancements and improvements. Optical principles are now well understood and, to an extent, the optical limits have been reached, and the majority of light microscopes used to this day follow the same structural and optical principles that were discovered years ago.

Office Cleaning – You ...

It is an exciting time when you are moving to a new office or new premises for your business, but it can also be stressful. When setting up your new office, you will not only have to move a lot of material but you will also have to set up new services for your office. These types of services will usually include:

Office Cleaning – You may want to have a post moving clean as well!

Internet and Networking – If you want your office to be able to communicate effectively, this is vital!

Office Supplies – This needs to be an ongoing process but your initial orders will be larger.

Utilities – You won’t be able to get started without at least some electricity.

Office Cleaning

Having regular office cleaning services organised is important and it will depend on the size of your office and number of employees as to how often it should be cleaned. If you have these services provided by a company, you should also check if they provide industrial cleaning if you have an attached warehouse or workshop. Having the same company provide a few services will give you some leverage when negotiating contracts.

Internet and Networking

Without internet and networking capabilities, most offices will cease to function efficiently. Not only will these need to be ordered, but in most cases they will need to be set up by a professional unless you happen to have a network administrator on the team. Even if you do, chances are they will at least require some temporary assistance for such a large job.

Make sure that there is an easy way for employees to access any company wireless internet routers. This may involve preparing a cheat sheet or having your in-house IT expert (or outsourced one) to come around to each employee. Have all of your internet and networking systems checked thoroughly before moving everyone into the office as well.

Office Supplies

Office supplies is such a broad term that it can mean everything from paper right through to rewritable DVDs. The best way to deal with this is to have a specific office co-ordinator that helps out with the day-to-day running of the office. This also creates a go-to person for any questions or concerns about the internal running of the office.

You will also need to set aside space for a good amount of office supplies to be bought as an initial order. Make sure you have plenty of pens, paper, notebooks and even spare keyboards. You might also want to have a whiteboard or book where staff can jot down anything they believe should be ordered with the office supplies.

Utilities

This is an easy one to forget, but if you are in a commercial office then chances are you will have to negotiate the cost of your electricity or gas connection. Make sure you have an idea of what your monthly cost will be as well as ways to increase efficiency around the office. If you are running a lot of computers, make sure your staff members understand that they should shut them down after they are finished using them.

Good luck with your office move!
